TO THE PUBLIC IN GENERAL

The undersigned, including gallery owners, museum directors, researchers, art historians, and artists, all of us professionally connected to the study of the life and work of the painter FRIDA KAHLO, vigorously protest and denounce those responsible for the publication of the catalogue entitled El Laberinto de Frida Kahlo. Muerte, dolor y ambivalencia. Cartas ilustradas, dibujos y notas íntimas published by the so-called “Centro de Estudios del Arte Mexicano” in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, in 2008, and in the United States under the title Finding Frida Kahlo: Diaries, Letters, Recipes, Notes, Sketches, Stuffed Birds, and Other Newly Discovered Keepsakes by Barbara Levine and Stephen Jaycox, published in 2009 by Princeton Architectural Press.

All of the alleged “documentation” and “works” reproduced in these publications have been identified by the most experienced and discerning experts on the work of FRIDA KAHLO as FAKES.

According to these publications, this collection of bogus documents and works is said to belong to Carlos Noyola and Leticia Fernández.

This apocryphal information has crossed borders and seeks legitimacy by appearing in serious publications and broadcasts, such as La Jornada, Noticieros Televisa, The New York Times, and more recently, The Washington Post.

We request that the authorities and cultural institutions responsible for Mexico’s artistic patrimony intervene immediately in this matter, because we believe it is the obligation of the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, and those who control the Frida Kahlo copyright to put an end to this false simulacrum by clarifying the situation through their immediate intervention to bring a halt to the continued deceit that is being perpetrated through the actions of unscrupulous individuals and that directly affects and detracts from the work and memory of FRIDA KAHLO, an artist singled out as Artistic Patrimony of the Mexican Nation.

Sincerely,

Mary-Anne Martin, Sandra Weisenthal, Irene Herner, Pedro Diego Alvarado, Teresa del Conde, Alejandra Reygadas de Yturbe, Mariana Pérez Amor, James Oles, Hayden Herrera, Salomon Grimberg, Helga Prignitz-Poda, Andrés Blastein, Cristina Kahlo, Cristina Secci, Juan Carlos Pereda.
